Mulching
Mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface of soil for the following purposes:

to conserve moisture

to improve the fertility and health of the soil

to reduce weed growth

to enhance the visual appeal of the area.
Mulch may be permanent or temporary and can be applied to bare soil, or around existing plants. This process is used in commercial and residential flower bed and landscaping, and when applied correctly can improve soil productivity immensely.
